Defining the Problem

After Gadgil spent three years at LBL, he and his wife moved back to India. Hoping to bring some of the latest ideas in energy, technology, and conservation to his homeland, Gadgil began work at a research institute in New Delhi. He tried to find solutions for basic problems, including the most efficient way to heat water and homes. In five years, he was granted four patents for solar heaters, and he made strides in electrical power conservation. However, growing frustrated by the Indian government’s placing bureaucratic impediments in his path each time he tried to implement a change, he returned to LBL in 1988.

Gadgil’s attention was again drawn to India in 1993, when a deadly outbreak of cholera spread throughout the southeastern part of the country. He was reminded of his childhood, when several cousins died from similar waterborne diseases. The quest for safe, clean water became the environmental issue at the forefront of Gadgil’s work.
